What is Composite Dental Bonding?

You may feel self-conscious of your appearance if your smile reflects teeth that are stained, chipped or have a noticeable gap. Composite dental bonding is a procedure that can help to correct minor cosmetic flaws and leave you feeling more confident in your smile. If you are considering having this procedure done, your first step is to schedule an appointment with a cosmetic dentist for a consultation.

During your consultation with a cosmetic dentist, he or she will speak to you about your treatment goals. In addition to desiring a more attractive smile, having composite dental bonding applied to your affected teeth can improve your overall dental health. Composite dental bonding helps to correct conditions of exposed roots due to recession of the gums and restores decaying teeth.

After you and the cosmetic dentist have a clear understanding of your goals with composite dental bonding, the next step is for the dentist to examine your teeth. The purpose of the examination is for the cosmetic dentist to be able to match your tooth color to composite resin as closely as possible. Resin is the material that is used to create a replacement tooth, while bonding is the process used to apply it. Today’s cosmetic dentists can create new teeth made out of resin that are virtually undetectable from your existing teeth.

Before applying the resin using the bonding agent, the dentist must roughen the surface of your tooth in preparation. This process can be described as sanding your tooth, but it is not painful. In fact, the entire process of composite dental bonding produces very little discomfort. Anesthesia is generally not used, but you may wish to use ibuprofen afterwards if your mouth feels sore. Once the tooth has been prepared, the dentist molds the resin material by using a high-intensity laser. After it has hardened into place, the dentist will continue to shape and mold the tooth until it appears completely natural. On average, this procedure takes between 30 and 60 minutes to complete.
